Sterilization of cats: types of procedures and their features
Puberty of a cat is often accompanied by hormonal surges, such as loud screams, increased activity at night, scratching, etc. In such situations, owners resort to pet sterilization, which not only eliminates agitated behavior, but also minimizes the risks of diseases of the reproductive system and increases life expectancy. Sterilization is a procedure in which the reproductive organs are removed or their work is restricted. The main purpose of such an intervention is to prevent a cat from reproducing. Sterilization has a number of advantages: the absence of estrus, protection from the appearance of cysts on the ovaries and diseases of the uterus (including tumors), stabilization of the emotional state of the pet, a humane solution to prevent unwanted offspring. Despite the positive aspects, sterilization has several nuances: the procedure can cause thromboembolism, which is life-threatening for breeds such as Maine Coon, Sphinx, Scottish and British fold, the risk of medical error, resulting in inflammatory processes and other complications, an increased risk of pet obesity due to an insatiable appetite and low activity. There are several types of ste
Tubal occlusion During the procedure, the cat's fallopian tubes are bandaged, which prevents any possibility of getting pregnant in the future. Despite the fact that the intervention is operative, the organs of the reproductive system are not affected. Classical sterilization Intervention is performed along the white line of the abdomen or through a side incision. In the latter case, the incision is made on the side, and the muscles are separated using a blunt method. The procedure is performed using a surgical hook. It is often confused with laparoscopy, which is not entirely true. The intervention involves dissection of the peritoneum and skin, but with an ultra-small size of the incision itself. A sterile hook is inserted into it, which hooks the ligament to the ovary. Next, a ligature is applied and either the uterus is completely removed, or the ovary with a ligament is removed. The option is considered less traumatic in comparison with tubal occlusion. There is no need to take care of the seams. After the procedure, the pet can continue its usual lifestyle, gradually stabilizing its condition. Laparoscopy is another name for the procedure – ecdoscopic sterilization. Micro-punctures are performed on the skin in the abdominal cavity, after which the uterus and ovaries are completely removed. The operation is expensive, as the process uses modern and high-tech equipment. The chemical sterilization method is considered to be a temporary solution. A special implant with a medicinal solution is inserted under the cat's skin. The drug enters the hematopoietic system, as a result of which the pet has a temporary sterilization effect that lasts about 3 years. The choice of the sterilization method should be approached with full responsibility. In order not to harm your pet and choose the right way, consult the specialists of the veterinary clinic.
