Neoplasms of the mammary glands are oncological pathology, which can be of a benign and malignant type. The tumor can develop in all mammals, but the disease is most common in dogs and cats. According to statistics, neoplasms occur mainly in pets older than 10 years (about 70%) and 15 years (about 80%). The following factors can serve as the reasons for the development of this pathology. Age of the pet – neoplasms of the mammary glands in dogs occur at the age of 7 to 9 years, then the number of diseases decreases. The likelihood of a tumor in cats increases with age. Sterilization – the procedure reduces the risk of disease by 15% (before the first estrus) and by 25% (before the second estrus). The use of progesterones to suppress estrus increases the possibility of developing mastopathy. The sex of the animal – in most cases, the disease occurs in females.

Diagnostics In order to determine the presence of a seal and its localization in a pet, a specialist conducts an external examination and palpation. It is necessary to identify the consistency, connection with the surrounding tissue, the presence of foci of necrosis or dysfunction of internal organs. To obtain more detailed information about the nature of the neoplasm, a biopsy is prescribed. The veterinarian at our clinic confirms the diagnosis based on: the results of an examination of the breast and nearby lymph nodes, X-rays, ultrasound of the abdominal and thoracic cavities, cytological examination of punctures from tumors and lymphatic tissues, examination of the material that was taken from the affected surface or necrotic focus. It is imperative to conduct a histological examination of the excised pathological tissue, since an erroneous diagnosis is often made based on biopsy data.

If a malignant neoplasm is detected, it is urgently necessary to remove the neoplasia (if possible). Currently, surgical intervention is the most effective method of fighting tumors. The success of the operation depends on many factors, including the general condition of the pet and the stage of the disease. The volume of surgical intervention is determined taking into account the type and nature of the neoplasm, the age of the animal, and the presence of concomitant pathologies. If a clinical case requires it, nearby lymph nodes are removed along with the mammary glands. They are used to predict the likelihood of relapse and the survival of the pet.  Positive results can only be achieved if you contact the clinic on time for diagnosis and treatment.
